Dr. Ken Redcross’ Sinus Complication Relief Tips

  1. Drink plenty of water. Hydrating can help thin the mucus in your cavities and decrease the pressure in your sinuses. You can also try drinking warm liquids if you are experiencing discomfort in your throat.
  2. Try using steam. Try taking a hot shower so the steam can thin out the mucus in your passageways and reduce inflammation.
  3. Use warm facial packs. You can soak a towel in warm water and place it on your nose or forehead to find comfort from the pain and relieve inflammation.
  4. Control allergies. When exposed to allergens your body increases mucus production and nasal tissues start to swell. If you are able to get ahead of your allergies, you maybe be able to prevent the swelling from blocking your mucus drainage.
  5. Actively fight colds. Similarly to allergies, the common cold attacks the nasal passages causing them to swell. The mucus production
  6. Running a humidifier. This machine will convert water into water vapor or steam to add moisture to the room. The moist air will help soothe the irritation and the swelling in your sinuses.
  7. Irrigate nasal passageways. The neti pot is one way you can flush out the mucus in your nasal cavity and enhance your nasal breathing. Make sure you use distilled or sterile water when irrigating your nasal passageway.
  8. Search for phenylephrine-free products. The FDA deemed the ingredient found in popular cold and cough products ineffective. This ingredient is phenylephrine which is an over-the-counter drug used as a decongestant. Medicines that contain phenylephrine and other active ingredients are still deemed effective but try looking for phenylephrine-free alternatives.
  9. Keep homeopathic medicines on hand. Unlike other over-the-counter sinus relief medicines, homeopathic medicines work without drowsiness or interacting with other medications, herbs, or supplements. They tend to work best when taken at the first sign of symptoms. Homeopathic sinus relief products are also phenylephrine-free.
  10. Elevate the head while sleeping. Wedge a pillow to elevate the head to reduce the congestion build up and open the sinuses. This will allow you to sleep better when experiencing nasal congestion.
  11. See your doctor if you get worse. When you start to see yellow or green nasal discharge with your sinus pain or if you also start to experience a high fever, difficulty breathing, or bloody nasal discharge seek medical attention.
